How to negotiate with your boss?
When we imagine about the negotiation skills that we have, we mostly focus on your skills while negotiating with the external clients, partners and suppliers. But the most challenging form of negotiation which we face at the workplace is the negotiation with the boss. This can go any far from salary negotiation to extension of the annual leave and a request for flexible working hours.
The fact is, the most important relationship at the workplace is the one with the manager. So, the way you negotiate and influence him/her will have a lasting impact on your job and career. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you follow proper steps while negotiating with your boss.
STEP 1: GET THE CORRECT TIMING
Lead your way to the boss only when you are sure it is the right time. Also try to make sure that the conversation takes place after some successful project, in which you have contributed or you have put in extra efforts.
STEP 2: PREPARE YOURSELF
Get into the cabin only after doing compete research. If you are with the desire for having a salary hike, make sure you have researched about the similar organisation and the salary that they offer at your position.
STEP 3: CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS
Be positive and neutral and do not lose the temperament while sticking yourself to the issue. Avoid showing the importance of the concern to you, as this may impact your position.
STEP 4: TRY TO SHOW THE MUTUAL BENEFITS
Try and demonstrate the way your expectation can benefit you both. Like, if you are there to ask for flexible working hours, try and present how you will be able to contribute extra time and efforts to the business through this. Let them see that you offer them something that is valuable and by acting positive on your request your boss will enjoy better position as well.
STEP 5: BE SPECIFIC
Before moving forward with the conversation it is always better to clear all the thoughts in your head. It is also suggested to know the “Best Alternative to Negotiated Agreement”, as it would be your failure if you cannot reach any agreement.
STEP 6: SUMMARISE THE AGREEMENT
Either you may ask your boss to send an email to confirm you about the outcome of the conversation or you may drop an email to your account mentioning the request, the agreed response or any timeline for the response.
Negotiating may seem to be a challenging type of communication as it may lead to conflicts as well. But the negotiation with boss is a great concern as there is always a power gap between you both. But remember that negotiating and influencing skills define your career and improve opportunities in your life as well. So keep a kind focus on them.
